- HISTORIC PRESERVATION STARTS WITH YOU & YOUR PASSION -

The Eagle River Historical Society welcomes members and the general community to participate more fully in the work and activities of our organization. Remember, saving history starts with you and the rest of us, so Stand in the Gap! The range of involvement goes from a single project, to commitment as a committee chair, and if there is some skill that you wish to hone or gain let us know and we can see what we can do. Our volunteers are full year or seasonal, weekly or occasional, with a large range of interest in many areas.

Docent at our Museums

Join the front lines in sharing our heritage by Docenting at any of our museums. Working the front desk or being a tour guide is the best way to connect people to our history!

Steward Over the Collection

With thousands of historic artifacts under our care across two museums, we are always looking for people who can help sort, preserve, and keep record of our collection.

Design Exhibitions

In between the layers of history, there are endless topics & perspectives yet to be explored. Through research and artifacts, help develop ways to engage & educate.

Expand our Research Databases

One of our cornerstone services is to provide information to the public for personal research, which we do through digitizing archival and collection materials.

Outreach & Event Planning

Our presence in the community is heavily reliant on outreach to the public. Do you like public speaking or planning large scale events? We could always use an extra hand!

Writing & Research

Have a passion for research and searching high and low for information? Join our team of Historians and Researchers in uncovering details of the past for the public to enjoy.

ARE YOU A HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE STUDENT?

If you are a student at any local school or live in the area seasonally, the Eagle River Historical Society frequently works with students and adults by offering internships to anyone looking to gain skills in the Museum and Public History field. Listed below are what we typically offer individuals depending on the level of schooling they are at:

High School: Ages 14-18

We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities, mostly awarding Community Service Hours to High School students who need to mee graduating requirements. Some of the things we allow for Community Service Hours are:

  • Museum Docenting/ Volunteering
  • Archival and Collections work
  • Museum Cleaning and Lawn/ Snow Care
  • Assistance at our Events and Programs
If you would like to just have some museum experience, just let us know. Needing Community Service hours is not a requirement, it is just something that we offer for people's resumes. This does make High School Students eligible for any scholarships we may offer if they wish to pursue them.

General Internships: Ages 18+

The internships we offer can be for resume building or for college credit. These internships range from a minimum of 120 hours (most are 150) and allow individuals to learn the following and more, about the Public History Field:

  • Museum Docenting/ Volunteering and Public Relations
  • Archival and Collections work as well as Museum Display Construction
  • Museum Operations at Board Level and Day to Day Operations
  • Formal Historic Research & Oral Histories

Internships are not paid nor does the E.R.H.S. provide any housing, however, College Students are eligible for any scholarships we may offer. We will also happily serve as a reference on resumes (provided good job performance).
